Show me tell me

During your practical driving test you will be required to answer 2 questions concerning the operation and maintenance of the vehicle, one explanatory and the other demonstrative.

Those questions requiring a demonstration (Show Me) are:

Identify where and how you would check the engine oil level.

Find the dipstick/oil level gauge and describe how to check the level of oil against the min/max markers.

Where is the engine coolant level and how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

Find the high/low level markings on header tank, where fitted, or radiator filler cap and describe how to top up to the correct level.

Where is the windscreen washer bottle and how would you check the level.

Locate the washer bottle and explain how to check the level.

Where is the brake fluid reservoir and how would you check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Find the reservoir and check the level against high/low markings.

How would you check that the power steering is working before starting a journey.

If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

How would you check the parking brake for excessive wear.

Demonstrate by applying the parking brake so that when it is fully applied it secures itself and is not at the end of the working travel.

How would you check that the horn is working.

The check is carried out by using the horn control. (Off road only)

How would you check that indicators are working.

Applying the indicators or hazard warning switch and check functioning of all indicators.

How would you check that the headlights and tail lights are working.

Turn on the lights using the necessary switch (turn on ignition if necessary) and walk round the vehicle to ensure they have come on.

How would you check that the brake lights are working.

Operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors to see the lights are on or ask someone to help.

Those questions requiring an explanation (Tell me) are:

How would you check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

Where would you find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

The information can be found in the manufacturer’s guide. To check the pressure use a reliable pressure gauge and check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold not forgetting the spare tyre. Remember to refit value caps.

How would you check the tread depth of the tyres and their general conditions is safe.

Check there are no cuts or bulges. That there is 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
